GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) is the absolute maximum your vehicle can weigh when fully loaded. If towing a caravan or trailer you must include the downward towball weight, so hitch up the van, load up the car as if you were going on a trip and weigh in. If you have a factory GVM of 3000kg and your fully loaded vehicle with caravan hitched up is 3050kg, you have exceeded your GVM.
Most States in Australia are cracking down on overweight vehicles, any vehicle found to be exceeding their GVM will receive a hefty fine, and, be required to start unloading their gear.
It can be a tricky decision to make as to who you leave behind... the wife?....the kids?....the dog?...the esky? Think carefully before deciding :)
